Top of the range was the RCX luxury hightop model which sported a water heater and shower room, the door of which opens out across the back of the van for privacy - a design which has changed very little over the years - my 1995 Autosleeper (and even the latest models) share this feature although a cassette toilet is now fitted rather than the Porta-Pottie.

Looking in from the side window shows the Autosleeper flexible seating layout in dinette mode on the left. Either one or both of the "settees" can be changed into forward facing seats if required as shown on the right (different van). Autosleeper upholstery from this period is normally a tweedy beige as in the right hand photo but the one on the left has been re-upholstered to the owners taste.

Auto-Sleeper RHT RV50 and Rimini

The RV50 and the later Rimini had a solid sided elevating roof which was erected entirely from the inside, there's no need to go outside to put the roof up when it's raining! There is some confusion about what is an RV50 and what is a Rimini.

I believe that the RV50 was based on the earlier "bull nosed" Trafic with the 1647cc or 1397cc petrol engine whereas the Rimini was virtually the same van but with the later "flat grill" type body and the 1721cc OHC engine. Some later Riminis had the 2165 cc petrol or the 2068cc diesel engine.

There are other slight differences between the RV50 and Rimini but slight is the operative word.

The RHT
The RHT was the hightop version of the RV50 and apart from the advantages or disadvantages of the high roof, it had almost the same interior. The RHT had an extra bed in the the hightop while some (but not all) RV50's/Riminis had a hammock-like bed on each side of the van in addition to normal the sleeping arrangements, making the vans theoretically four berth. However, the hammocks in the elevating roof models aren't really suitable for adults, so they can only really be classed as 2+2s.

Apart from the Recro, all the vans on this page have the Auto-Sleeper flexible seating arrangement, whereby the rear seats can be configured as two settees, two forward facing seats or one of each.

For sleeping, these seats are used in conjunction with the front seats to make two singles or, by using the table top, a special support and the two backrests, a large double.The special support has very often gone missing with the passage of time, and people have had to improvise. Recently, an RTMR member kindly supplied photos and dimensions of this component and they can be seen in the members section of this site, for anyone who wishes to make their own.

Fridge and wardrobe

Behind the rear seats on the driver's side is the fridge with a small cupboard beneath it and a basic Zig panel on the wall above. The fridges on the early vans were 2 way, Gas and 12v (only when the engine was running) Later Riminis were equipped with 3 way fridges, Gas, Mains power for when on EHU, and 12v when on the move.

After the fridge is the wardrobe, with quite a generous amount of hanging room. This is one of the places where the RHT differs from the RV50 as it has a crockery cupboard above the sink in the hightop and a matching locker opposite over the wardrobe.

To the rear of the van on the nearside is the cooker, comprising two rings and a grill, then the sink and draining board. There is no hot water as standard but fresh water is electrically pumped from an onboard tank. There is no waste tank as standard.

There are storage cupboards beneath the cooker and sink, and the bases of the "lounge" seating can be used for storage. The one nearest to the side door is divided and part of it is used to contain the gas bottle(s).

The RV50/Rimini and RHT are very nice vans to drive, they have (opening) windows all the way down the passenger side and three quarters of the way down the drivers side. In addition to giving the driver a good all-round view for manoeuvrability, it makes the interior "living quarters" of the van very light and airy.

Auto-Sleeper Rapport

The Rapport is a high top conversion which superceded the RHT and the RCX but it does not have the "all round" windows and lost that "ethereal" effect of the previous models. The versatile Autosleeper seating layout in the Rapport was similar to the previous models, but with the improvement of a swivelling passenger front seat. While the front part of the van was similar to the old vans, the kitchen area was quite different.

At the rear on the off side is a full height wardrobe with a Riviera gas fire below this, followed by a sink unit with separate drainer in brown enamel rather than the stainless steel of the previous models. Above the sink is a locker fitted out to hold bottles and glasses.

Opposite is a twin burner hob and grill and a raised fridge. Another locker is fitted above the cooker and a locker above the fridge holds the famous Auto-Sleepers crockery which is still supplied with every new Auto-Sleeper. You will be very lucky indeed if there is still a full set in any used van you may be thinking of buying.

A small locker under the fridge houses the gas control taps and makes a good shoe locker. A roller blind is fitted in order to section off the rear of the van to make a privacy area.

Many, but not all Rapports were supplied with a Vaillant gas water heater and Propex blown air heating.

Auto-Sleeper Recro

The Recro is a Trafic high top whose interior layout is more in keeping with traditional Volkswagen campers. All of the kitchen is fitted along the offside and it benefits from stainless steel appliances which have less tendency to chip like the enamel units in the Rapport.

The seating layout is totally different from the other Auto-Sleeper panel vans, the passenger seat swivels and opposite this is a transverse settee. The settee converts into a double bed using a "Rock and Roll" mechanism. (The photos are from different vans hence the different upholstery)

Storage is provided in the kitchen units, under the settee, in lockers above the cab and at the rear of the vehicle.

Heating is by a Propex blown air gas heater. A child's bed could be fitted into the high top as an option.

Auto-Sleeper Romero

Most of the words below are Auto-Sleepers' own, so I hope they don't mind me using them.
The elegant yet stylish Romero offers the opportunity for economical, comfortable, motorcaravanning.
It's an unusually compact and luxurious vehicle with a host of features that epitomises the care and attention to detail for which Auto-Sleepers is justifiably renowned.
With a choice of either 2.2 petrol or 2.1 diesel engine. The Romero is truly a vehicle for the enthusiast, and lacks for nothing.

Designed as a two berth (an upper bed is available as an option) the Romero's versatile design boasts the choice of two rear forward facing seats, each equipped with lap and diagonal inertia reel seat belts. For entertaining, twin dinettes are made by 'reversing the cab seats. Additionally a settee, so useful for relaxation, may be formed on the offside. The Romero features carefully selected upholstery, trims and fabrics which all combine to make it that little bit special.

At night two single beds or a transverse double may be made quickly and easily; an optional longitudinal double is also available. Thermally lined curtains and blinds with flyscreens are fitted to the lower caravan windows. The aerodynamically styled high top roof features top hinged double glazed acrylic windows; with blinds and flyscreens. Well insulated, the Romero affords high levels of comfort.

For those seeking that little extra, the Romero may be specified with a Carver Cascade gas/230 Volt water heater and Propex 1600W thermostatically controlled heater.

Toilet

The luxury toilet area is situated in the rear of the vehicle, the Thetford Cassette toilet is mounted on runners and may be moved inwards for use. When not required it slides unobtrusively under the wardrobe, thus ensuring space in the rear of the vehicle remains uninhibited. In the stowed position the toilet is fitted with a cushion matched to the vehicle upholstery which can double as a useful seat whilst cooking An easy to operate room divider provides privacy when required. Fully trimmed and insulated, this toilet area features a large wardrobe, vanity mirror and roof light.

The kitchen is situated to the rear of the dinette and includes a stainless steel sink and drawer, two burner grill/cooker and a gas/12volt/230volt Electrolux refrigerator. The unit tops are enhanced with polished routered hardwood edging and being finished in a hardwearing heat resistant laminate offer useful extra work surface. Chinaware for four, 13 amp and 12 volt sockets and extensive twin tube fluorescent lighting complete the picture.

Safety is very much a consideration in the design of the Romero. Both rear seat bases are metal framed and are complemented further with cushions manufactured in fire retardant Reflex foams. Safety is further enhanced by the fitting of a residual current device, mains hookup lead, and of course a fire extinguisher.

The Romero is finished with stylish coachlines and logos, with gutter extensions above the cab doors. The spare wheel is mounted on the nearside rear door on a specially designed stainless steel bracket; a padlock and a cover ensure security and protection.
